June 6th - June 19th, 2010 Workshops in Taormina, Sicily, Italy
Summer 2010 will mark the first ever New Plains Press workshops on the island of Sicily. Goethe once said, "If you haven't been to Sicily, you haven't been to Italy." Sicily was part of the Greek Empire, and has also been home to many cultures from Northern Europe to Saharan Africa. Sicily is home to fabulous
doc wines, some of the planet's greatest cuisine, most beautiful art, and breathtaking scenery. If you cannot be inspired here, you may not be able to be inspired. Come and join us for a memorable vacation and writing workshops from a few writers who love Sicily and writing.
Payment Deadline for payment #1 is 28 Feb 2010. Payment Deadline for payment #2 is 31 Mar 2010.
If a participant signs up after 28 Feb 2010, the first payment is automatically due. More than enough people have shown an interest, for the program to run, so now we are excited about seeing how interested people really are. Thanks so much for the interest shown. The first 20 to send back forms and payments will be the 20 accepted for the workshops. Those sending money too late will have their money returned immediately. Thanks again.

The Medusa Tree,
The Deadwood Beetle, and
The Floodmakers, has taught
creative writing and literature on campuses in the United States,
Europe, and Latin America. Born in the Netherlands to a
world-traveling family, she specializes in techniques and approaches
that invite students to think creatively and dynamically about
the experiences that inform their own lives, cultures, and dreams.
"Creative Writing, Creative Living" will be her first workshop in
Taormina, Sicily. She will also do one-on-one sessions with the participants.

Johnny Summerfield, author of
I, Suwannee, and co-author of
Remembering Sicily,
has spent
many years in Italy. His poetry and his teaching involves visiting
nature poetry
and coming up with new ways to write it in an effort to educate readers
about the importance of local living and global thinking. He will be
leading a
workshop titled, "Taormina, Your Triggering Town," and a workshop
titled, "A Natural Approach to Nature Poetry." He will introduce the
participants to local farmers and speak on the slow food initiative
Sicilians have naturally adopted. He is a writing instructor at
Columbus State University and a publisher/editor. He has an MFA in Poetry from Goddard.
WORKSHOP LEADER T.B.A.
"Living Amongst the Giants" part one, focusing on Sicilian writers throughout history.
Scott Wilkerson, who has published in various journals and whose book of poetry titled
Threading Stone has been published by New Plains Press, is a Writing Instructor at Columbus State University. Scott will teach the second part of "Living Amongst the Giants" by focusing on the literature written by the authors who visited Sicily to write, and he will focus on the works they wrote or started writing in Sicily. Scott has an MA in English from Auburn University and an MFA in Creative Writing from Queens College.
Gail Greenblatt has a BA in English Education from the University of Florida. She has thirty years experience in food writing and professional book editing. She has done live cooking on local television, taught gourmet cooking (to include instruction at Chautauqua), and has also lectured for the American Heart Association, Healthy Eating campaigns. She teaches food related courses for Columbus State
University's continuing
education department. She has also performed themed cooking presentations for museum exhibits.
Gail has recently learned Sicilian cuisine through an intense cooking tour of Sicily, and she will be offering short cooking courses of the regional cuisine. These courses are available exclusively for this program and the cost is separate, but very reasonable. $30 - 50 per course, depending on number of participants and includes trips to the local market to pick out the meal items. Several of these short courses will be available, and the best part is you get to help eat the food. Now that makes it all worth it.
Language Courses at
Babilonia are also available, but are not included in the price or the program. Babilonia also has art classes and various other extra-curricular activities like scuba, golf, cooking, culture classes, et cetera.
Participants will be staying close to downtown, in the resort town of
Taormina. The sea is very close and is even visible depending on your vantage point. There is a funivia or lift that can take you down to the beach very cheaply. Three day-long excursions to Agrigento, Siracusa, and Catania are included, as well as one 1/2 day excursion, a boat ride, in the Gulf of Catania, visiting the grottoes. Transportation from Catania Fontana Rosa International Airport to Taormina and from Taormina back to the airport, accommodations, excursions, workshops, and an arrival gift are all included in the price. Accommodations are in a nice hotel that seems more like a home. Unless you have a preference to be alone or you come along with others, you may need to share a room with a participant of the same gender. If you desire to be alone, the cost will be $200 higher. The hotel has an outside pool, free American-style breakfast or continental breakfast (your choice), and Italian-style bar. The rooms have air conditioning. The hotel is located very close to the funivia and all of the fun, but not so close that you cannot sleep due to the noise. If you simply detest staying in a hotel, we can try to accommodate small groups and perhaps individuals in apartments. Individuals, again, may pay a bit more. The flight and any passport expenses are NOT included in the price. A visa isn't needed when visiting Italy for less than 90 days. The cost of this writer's adventure in Sicily is $2200 and a minimum of fifteen people must attend or the workshops program will be canceled.
1st 1/2 or
$1100 to be paid by February 28th, 2010.
2nd 1/2 or
$1100 to be paid by March 31st, 2010.
Please understand that once a payment is made a refund may not be given. Though, if you pay the first and then decide not to go, the second payment is not necessary. If you find out about the program and decide to participate in the program after February 28th, the 1st 1/2 payment will be needed immediately.
No applications will be accepted after March 31st. Application forms can be requested and we will either email the application in pdf format, or mail it out. Most copy shops can scan the completed form for you, if you do not have the capability to scan, allowing you to email it back. If the program does not run due to insufficient numbers, all monies paid will be returned with a post-mark before April 15th, 2010.
The
Taormina Film Festival, which brings hundreds of people from around the globe to Taormina, also maintains dates in May/June. We try to match our dates with theirs as much as possible.
This program of workshops in Sicily requires a minimum of fifteen people, and a maximum of twenty. A medical and health waiver are required and participants should have their own health care plan. There is a supplemental accident plan through INA, which can be purchased through the Italian post office. Participants will also need to release Summerfield Publishing (New Plains Press) from any liability. Passport, and visa (if staying longer than 90 days) are also the responsibility of the participant.
